Incorporated in 1976, the EMSUA was founded by Les Pollard and Tim Beechey, two local umpires who started officiating in 1974 and 1975, respectively. The association focused on officiating the growing minor program in Edmonton, and expanded through the years to over 100 active officials.
In recent years, the membership of the EMSUA has settled around 80 members, making the EMSUA Alberta's second-largest Softball Canada-affiliated umpire association in 2003.
EMSUA umpires have officiated at various Softball Canada recognized events over the years including the Alberta Summer Games, Western Canada Summer Games, Canada Summer Games, Alberta Provincial Championships, Western Canadian Championships, Canadian Championships, and International Games.
In 2004 alone, 12 officials represented the EMSUA at events ranging from provincial evaluators to Canadian Championships, including the Bantam, Junior and Masters Western Canadian Championships, and the Midget Girls Canadian Championship.
The EMSUA is recognized country-wide through its accomplished members. The current president, Ken Jones, is a member of the Canadian Indicator Club. Representing the EMSUA on fields across the country are its level IV officials. Currently, the EMSUA has four active level IV umpires: Ron Jacobs, Brad McDonald, Jack Smith and David Triska (Jr).
To honour the contributions members have made both to the EMSUA and to the game of softball, certain officials have their EMSUA numbers retired by the association through a motion passed at the Annual General Meeting. Umpires who have had their EMSUA numbers retired include Les Pollard (1), Dennis Morin (4), Charlotte Kochan (5), and Harry Mjaatveit (6). All four put in years of hard work to develop the EMSUA's officials' program into what it is today. One member, Tim Beechey, has been awarded a lifetime membership with the EMSUA and still instructs at the EMSUA's annual clinic.
The EMSUA Executive consists of twelve positions, roughly half of which are up for election each year. Each Executive Member serves a two-year term. In odd-numbered years, the positions of President, 3rd Vice President, Northeast Zone Director, Southeast Zone Director, Assigner and Secretary are up for election. In even-numbered years, the positions of 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Northwest Zone Director, Southwest Zone Director and Treasurer are up for election. The twelfth position is the Past President. Officials who find the rigour of being on the field too much continue to contribute to the game of softball through their participation on the EMSUA Executive or as EMSUA Evaluators, putting in countless hours to better the EMSUA's officials' program throughout the year.
The EMSUA encourages all ages to get involved in officiating. Members range from 14 years of age to 60. If you want to stay involved with the sport, help out your community, and advance through an accomplished officials' program, look into joining the EMSUA. Challenges, opportunity, and, most importantly, fun await you.
