2004 Important Rule Changes
Edmonton Youth Softball Association
| 1) |
Batting Helmets (Page 17) |
Face-cage guards are mandatory on batting helmets for Mites and Squirts in 2004, Pee Wees and Bantams in 2005, and Midgets in 2006.
| 2) |
Carded Umpires (Page 20) |
Only EMSUA umpires can charge for officiating EYSA games. Likewise, non-EMSUA umpires have no authority to forfeit a game due to non-payment. This is not a rule change as much as an emphasis. When in doubt, a coach should request to see the umpire's EMSUA membership card.
| 3) |
Summer Teams |
Players may play on two EYSA teams, provided one is a spring team and the other is a summer team.
| 4) |
Umpire Travel Charge (Page 20) |
The 2004 EYSA book contains a printing error. The umpire travel charge for surrounding communities is $10, not $5. This travel charge does not apply to games in either Sherwood Park or St. Albert.
| 5) |
Uniforms |
Shorts are now optional for all levels, and a team's use of shorts will be decided by that team's community league.
Alberta Amateur Softball Association
| 1) |
Time Limits (Page 16) |
For minor categories that do not lead to post-provincials, all games will have a time limit (no new inning to start) of one hour and forty five minutes.
| 2) |
Umpire Mileage (Page 34) |
The charge per kilometre for umpires is now set by Softball Alberta outside of the Handbook. For the 2004 season, the rate shall be $0.25/km. |
Canadian Amateur Softball Association
| 1) |
Drag/Running Bunt (Pages 102, 103) |
The drag (running) bunt is once again considered a bunt and not a slap hit. All pertinent consequences apply (ex. third strike on a foul ball).
| 2) |
Pitching (Page 119 onward) |
The pitching rule has been changed for Midget and higher male categories. Essentially, pitchers may now leap. The same rules apply to the channel (the non-pivot foot must land within the 24" width of the pitching rubber), and the crow hop (pushing off a second time) remains illegal.
For more information, refer to Softball Canada's Points of Emphasis on the subject.
